SAP Ausmaid, Overall Winner in 2000

Telstra Sydney Hobart Race 2000

Race Program

Prior to each race Cruising Yacht Club of Australia publishes a separate official race program (with details of competing boats, the results of past races and articles about the race and its participants and other important events).  The 2000 Edition is here.

Weather

The 2000 Telstra Sydney Hobart Race was a long, tough slog south in consistently fresh headwinds.  The winds and waves never reached dangerous levels, but there was little let up from the pounding and many spent 550 nautical miles hard on the wind.  Many crews thought this was their hardest Hobart.

The 25-35 knot south westerly and southerly winds that lasted through most of the race were bitingly cold.  There was snow falling on the Tasmanian mountains and Mt Wellington, towering behind Hobart, was receiving a dusting as Nicorette crossed Storm Bay on her way to taking line honours. The tough conditions suited the Farr 47, SAP Ausmaid, scoring her second overall IMS win.  Of the 82 starters, 24 yachts (29%) retired but the damage bill was light considering the conditions.
