HYC Breakthrough

HYC Breakthrough

Breakthrough, a Beneteau First 40, is owned by Australian professors Matthew Vadas and Jonathon Stone. Vadas last racing her to Hobart in 2016 to finish 52nd overall. She is now being raced by Darren Wright and his Irish crew for Howth Yacht Club in Ireland. Since 2017, Wright and team have set out to participate in a 'bucket list' of the most famous offshore races that sailing can provide. After dozens of Round Ireland and Rolex Fastnet Races, this experienced bunch is ready to tick the Rolex Sydney Hobart box and have added HYC to the front of the boat’s name.

Prior to 2016, Breakthrough finished the 2014 Rolex Sydney Hobart 12th overall, 27th in 2013 and 29th in 2012. Before that, the boat was Ted Tooher’s Chancellor, finishing 60th in 2011 and 37th in 2010. The hook for Wright and crew is to better the yacht’s best result of 12th in 2014 and beat the handful of other First 40s in the race.
