Profile
Last year Sam Haynes raced Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant’s Volvo 70 Willow, renamed her Celestial V70 and won the race overall by a huge margin after crossing the line in second place. He became just the third serving CYCA Commodore to win in the race’s history, joining Merv Davey (1949) and Sir Robert Crichton-Brown (1970). This year he races the V70 again.
A top performer with past Celestials, including winning the race in 2022 and placing second in 2021 and standout results in Audi Centre Sydney BWPS’ over the years, makes him a contender for the Tattersall Cup again. The yacht will be crewed by the mainstay of last year, led by Robert Greenhalgh and Jack Macartney. Haynes’ son, William, is joining him again for William’s third Hobart. Haynes, a vet and director and proprietor of Sydney Animal Hospitals, is supporting the Assistance Dogs Australia charity again.
