Seven home – five inside record time

All was quiet this morning at Hobart’s famous Constitution Dock, seven big boats home, five inside last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart race record, last year’s overall winner, Wizard (then sailing as Giacomo) and Wild Oats X, the little sister of Wild Oats XI the latest two arrivals in the early hours of this morning.

No-one else has ever done their first Rolex Sydney Hobart, their first proper ocean race really, on board their very own 100-foot super-maxi. And done it inside the record time set by that very same boat a year ago. Christian Beck has done both now, riding InfoTrack into 4th place across the line, around an hour inside the record time set by what was then called Perpetual Loyal.

Broken boom fails to stop Kialoa II

At 1730hrs on Wednesday Kialoa II gybed in 30kts of northerly breeze and 2 metre seas. As the main came over the boom snapped just aft of the vang. The broken boom was strapped to the stanchions and the boat secured before the storm trysail was hoisted, allowing Kialoa II to continue.
