Still a long race for some
This 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart may have been a spectacularly fast one for the quick yachts at the front of the fleet, but there is still a long way to go for the rest of the fleet - at dawn this morning, three were struggling up a completely windless Derwent River while the remaining 63 competing yachts were strung along the Tasmanian coast.

LDV Comanche secures line honours and the race record
Sport is often determined by fine margins and yachting is no exception. After a phenomenal contest between Jim Cooney’s LDV Comanche and the Oatley family’s Wild Oats XI over the full 628nm of the Rolex Sydney Hobart concluded yesterday in the Derwent River, the line honours title for first to finish was eventually decided today in the protest room. An incident between the two 100-footers, shortly after the start, was adjudged in favour of LDV Comanche.

This was a crew busting race, pay respect
Though overall honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race may have eluded them this time, there is a mutual respect among the skippers of the gun fleet of 50-footers for the battle in which they engaged. For it is in this group, each yacht perhaps half the size of a supermaxi, that the reward for excellence and seamanship finds its reward.

Matt Allen docked his brand new TP52 at Kings Pier at 9.00am this morning, acknowledging he will now have to play the waiting game to see if his Ichi Ban (No 1 in Japanese) is indeed No. 1 in the 2017 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

No-one else has ever done their first Rolex Sydney Hobart, their first proper ocean race really, on board their very own 100-foot super-maxi. And done it inside the record time set by that very same boat a year ago. Christian Beck has done both now, riding InfoTrack into 4th place across the line, around an hour inside the record time set by what was then called Perpetual Loyal.
