With the change to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Communications Structure this year and the removal of the requirement to carry a HF Radio, there are a number of new procedures in place for the 2024 edition of the great race. These are summarised below.
Position Reports
To be conducted via satellite phone SMS to the Hobart Race Control mobile number twice daily at 0635hrs and 1835hrs. Boats will have a 60-minute window to submit their position at these two times. For situational awareness, the position data will be emailed to all boat email addresses and may be published online on the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race website. Boats that do not comply within the hour will be contacted after the 60-minute window to be notified that Hobart Race Control hasn’t received their position.
Green Cape
Boats will be required to make a satellite voice call to Hobart Race Control when in the vicinity of Green Cape to make their declaration in accordance with the Sailing Instructions. This call must come from a satellite phone on board that meets Australian Sailing Special Regulation 3.25.1(a)(ii).
Retirements & Incidents
A boat that retires or requires assistance will call Hobart Race Control on the dedicated mobile number. This number is monitored 24/7. Following an initial phone call, Hobart Race Control may communicate with a competitor via satellite phone SMS.
Should there be an incident and the Race Committee needs to contact multiple yachts, a SMS will be sent to boats in the vicinity that may be able to assist and satellite phone calls made as required.
VHF
All VHF radio requirements (at the start and from Tasman Island onwards) remain the same as the 2023 race.
General
Contact numbers for the Race Committee Chair, Deputy Chair and CYCA Sailing Manager, will be included in the competitors contact list for general awareness as well as numbers for relevant stakeholders such as AMSA, Hobart and NSW Police and the CYCA Eden Representatives.
