2020 Grinders Coffee SOLAS Big Boat Challenge returns to Sydney Harbour

After the extensive bushfires of the 2019-2020 season caused thick smoke to blanket the Harbour and the cancellation of last year's race, CYCA is pleased to be able to bring the Grinders Coffeee SOLAS Big Boat Challenge to Sydney Harbour once again.

The Club has currently received entries from the two super maxis Peter Harburg’s RP100 Black Jack and Christian Beck’s Juan-K 100 InfoTrack, as well as Sean Langman's RP69 Moneypenny and Director David Griffith's JV62 Whisper. An additional couple of entries from the top-end of town are set to potentially make a surprise appearance too.

The Club would like to highlight some changes to the shore-side aspects of the race which will help to ensure a COVIDSafe event for all. Most importantly, there will be restrictions on the capacity of the Clubhouse as well as changes to how we are able to watch the race.

CLUBHOUSE CAPACITY

The CYCA Clubhouse and Marina, and also the Sydney Race Village, will be open to Members and guests on the day and COVIDSafe capacity limits will be in place.

The Sydney Race Village will have bar service available, with foodservice accessible through the Cafe 44 window adjacent the Sunset Gate (external to the Clubhouse).

Please be aware the CYCA Team will be constantly monitoring the Club's COVIDSafe protocols and access to the Clubhouse and site will be at the discretion of Staff.

HOW TO WATCH

Live stream - CYCA will be showing a live stream of the event to bring you all the action as it happens. You will be able to watch from 1215hrs Tuesday 8 December:

On the water - If you have a boat or other vessel, you may watch the race from the water and there is no exclusion zone around the racetrack (after the start area which does have a small exclusion zone). Bear in mind, these are big boats and they move quickly so please take extra care when manoeuvring your vessel.

From the land - CYCA kindly asks spectators to please not gather along the foreshore of Sydney Harbour to watch the race. NSW Government's COVIDSafe guidelines remain in force, including a restriction on public outdoor gatherings to 30 people (50 from Tuesday 1 December 2020). You can keep up to date with the latest information on the NSW Government's COVID-19 latest news & updates page.

We urge all spectators to please watch the race online or from the water.

So, while things are certainly different this year, CYCA is overjoyed to be able to bring the Grinders Coffee SOLAS Big Boat Challenge to life on Sydney Harbour once more. Good luck to all competitors, and we'll see you all at the Clubhouse soon!
