Van Diemen III

Van Diemen III

A newbie to the race, Robert Vaughan’s graceful wooden cruiser was designed by Warren Muir and built by Dave Blair. Her lines are influenced by the late and famous L Francis Herreshoff in the spirit of traditional yachting. Van Diemen III is a performance cruising yacht, on occasion referred to as a converted cray boat from Triabunna, built of laminated red and yellow cedars and comfortably outfitted with Tasmanian timbers. She has crossed the Pacific four times and spent three summers cruising in Tasmania, so should have no trouble in the Rolex Sydney Hobart. Van Diemen III will proudly represent the race finishing partner, Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, which well represented this year by a variety of boats. Father and son, Michael and Oli Bell, join the crew after Oli did his first race with Dad last year on Kayimai, along with James Farquharson.
