Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - Highlights

Simply the best bits from one of the most memorable races in history

Sunny skies and winds of 10-15 knots marked the start of the 74th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race as a fleet of 85 yachts set sail from Sydney Harbour at the traditional start time of 1pm on 26 December.  The battle for line honours was keenly contested by four of the five participating 30.5-metre (100 feet) Maxis, but it was 13-year-old Wild Oats XI, with Mark Richards at the helm, that ultimately prevailed to claim a record ninth title.  Overall victory and the Tattersall Cup went to Philip Turner’s 20-metre (66 feet) "Alive". It was a maiden win and a dream come true for the Tasmanian owner who as a boy had regularly watched the finishers sail into Constitution Dock. The winners were awarded timepieces from Rolex, the race’s Title Sponsor since 2002.
