Films that highlight the history of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - Episode 3

We hope you are enjoying the historical video’s we are bringing to you as we lead up to the start of the 70th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The 3rd episode of the series features the 1974 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Listen out for the groovy 1970’s soundtrack, and enjoy the feature about how race positions were being transmitted back then. We’ve certainly come a long way in 40 years!

You’ll see past versions of boats with the same names in this year’s fleet – Ragamuffin, Patrice and Helsal, and watch Love & War take her first of three overall wins (the others in 1978 and 2006). She is sailing in the 70th Rolex Sydney Hobart this year, with every opportunity to win her 4th race on handicap. If she does win overall this year she’ll become the record holder for the most overall Sydney Hobart wins.

Keep an eye out for the large freighter that broke down just before the start and couldn’t be moved off the course, the massive spectator fleet accompanying the yachts out of Sydney Harbour, and the incredible welcome the people of Hobart gave Line Honours winner Ondine at 02:00 in the morning of 30 Dec – that hasn’t changed.

There’s also some famous names that will be familiar to you – Alan Bond, Jack and Warwick Rooklyn, Bob Miller (AKA Ben Lexen), and John Kahlbetzer

Remember, If you can’t wait for the rest of the series to appear, feel free to visit CYCATV  where you’ll find archival films of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the entire back catalogue of Rolex Spirit of Yachting – Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race from 2002 to 2013 plus other films and interviews which we think you will find interesting.

We hope you enjoy the 3rd instalment of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race historical film series as we build to the start of the 70th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
