Trophy presentation closes 2013 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race came to its conclusion on January 1 at the Royal Club of Tasmania, where the Official Prize Giving took place

Welcoming guests, including His Excellency The Honourable Peter Underwood AC, Governor of Tasmania, Commodore Richard Batt from Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania said: “The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania is very pleased to be involved in finishing this great yacht race.

“I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work of Robert Devine and the staff at the Club and the many volunteers. Congratulations to all winners and all sailors. We look forward to seeing you all next year.”

His Excellency responded: “Welcome to Hobart and the finish of the 69th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Congratulations Wild Oats XI on a truly magnificent win – and to Dr Darryl Hodgkinson on his very well executed race.

“What a great mixture of boats; Wild Oats XI, Ragamuffin, Perpetual LOYAL, Wild Thing. The spirit of racing; the Volvo 70’s, yachts representing the latest thinking in technology and yacht design. The Clippers; Helsal 3 with her multi-national crew of six different nations – and Faceboat Sailors With DisABILITIES among others – no wonder it is referred to as one of the greatest races in the world.”  

His Excellency presented trophies. The first, the Polish Trophy for the Yacht Travelling from the Furthest Port to Compete, went to Clipper Ventures Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, while the first Armed Services Yacht on Corrected Time, the Oggin Cup, was won by Spirit of Mateship (Russell McCart, RSL Queensland Branch).

For most meritorious performance as judged by the race committee, the Rani Trophy was awarded to the Police Vessel Van Diemen, Leigh Stanley.

First Yacht Out of Sydney Heads, the Jack Rooklyn Memorial Trophy and Replica went to Wild Oats XI, Robert Oatley

First Yacht Due South of Tasman Island, the F & J Livingstone and Replica also went to Wild Oats XI.

Third Over the Line, the CYCA Trophy went to Ragamuffin 100, Syd Fischer; second Over the Line, the CYCA Trophy went to Perpetual LOYAL, Anthony Bell

Line Honours, the J.H Illingworth Trophy and Replica to Wild Oats XI. The Rolex timepiece was presented by Patrick Boutellier.

“On behalf of Bob Oatley and the team and all sailors, I thank the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Rolex, Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, all the volunteers, David Kellett and the Radio Relay Vessel team for a fantastic job by all. Thank you,” Mark Richards, skipper of Wild Oats XI said.

Commodore Batt from the RYCT presented third placed Sydney 38, the CYCA Trophy, to Mondo (Ray Sweeney) ; second Sydney 38, CYCA Trophy, to Mille Sabords (Stephane Howarth); first Sydney 38, Sydney Yachts Trophy and One Ton Cup, Zen (Gordon Ketelbey).

Commodore Batt also presented third PHS Division 2, CYCA Trophy, She's the Culprit (Glen Picasso); second PHS Division 2, CYCA Trophy, The Banshee (Corinne Feldmann and Rob Francis); First PHS Division 2, CYCA Trophy, She (Peter Rodgers); third PHS Division 1, CYCA Trophy, Faceboat Sailors with disABILITIES (David Pescud); second PHS Division 1, CYCA Trophy, Art Equity Mahligai (Murray Owen and Jenny Kings); first PHS Division 1, RANSA Trophy and CYCA Trophy, Spirit of Mateship (Russell McCart, RSL Queensland Branch).

First Female Skipper, the Jane Tate Memorial Trophy, went to Victoria Ellis on the yacht Switzerland.

Paul Weedon, Tasmanian ports presented the first Tasmanian Boat IRC, TasPorts Trophy to Martela (Anthony Williams) which also received third ORCi Division 3, CYCA Trophy.

Second ORCi Division 3 for the CYCA Trophy went to Pennant Hills Ford, Ian Creak; first ORCi Division 3, TasPorts Trophy went to Wild Rose (Roger Hickman); third ORCi Division 2 for the CYCA Trophy went to Minerva (Edward Cox); second ORCi Division 2, CYCA Trophy was awarded to Senna (Chris Manton); first ORCi Division 2 for the TasPorts Trophy went to Chutzpah (Bruce Taylor).

Third ORCi Division 1, CYCA Trophy, to Varuna (Jens Kellinghusen); Second ORCi Division 1, CYCA Trophy, Celestial (Sam Haynes); first ORCi Division 1, Charleston Trophy, Victoire, (Darryl Hodgkinson).

The Premier of Tasmania, Larissa Giddings, presented the following: third Clipper 70 Division, CYCA Trophy, Old Pulteney (Patrick Van Der Zijden); second Clipper 70 Division, CYCA Trophy, Great Britain (Simon Talbot); first Clipper 70 Division, CYCA Trophy, Derry-Londonderry-Doire (Sean McCarter).

Third IRC Division 4, CYCA Trophy, Martela (Anthony Williams); second IRC Division 4, CYCA Trophy, Illusion (Kim Jaggar and Travis Read); first IRC Division 4, Sir Arthur Warner Trophy and Replica, Wild Rose (Roger Hickman):which also received first IRC Division 4, CYCA Trophy.

Patrick Boutellier, Rolex Australia, presented: third IRC Overall, RYCT Trophy and Replica to Celestial (Sam Haynes) which also received third IRC Overall, Storm Bay Cup and Replica;

Second IRC Overall, City of Hobart Trophy and Replica, Veloce (Phil Simpfendorfer). which also received second IRC Overall, Bass Strait Cup and Replica, second IRC Overall Solo Trophy and Replica and second IRC Overall CYCA Trophy.

Designer of Winning Yacht, Alan Payne Memorial Trophy and Replica to Victoire  Farr Yacht Design. Navigator of Winning Yacht, Bill Owen Memorial Trophy and Replica to Victoire’s Phil Eadie.

Victoire (Darryl Hodgkinson) received the following: First IRC Overall, Tattersalls Cup and Replica; first IRC Overall, CYCA Trophy; first IRC Overall, RORC Plaque and Replica; first IRC Overall, Government of Tasmania Trophy and Replica; and first IRC Overall, the Rolex timepiece.

In accepting, Darryl Hodgkinson said: “This is a proud moment for myself, my crew and my wonderful yacht. The commitment of my crew to sail the yacht to its maximum potential – Danny McConville for always making the yacht ready to a professional standard – to Sean Kirkjian for masterminding the whole program and putting together all of the tactics.

“This yacht has come second overall and fourth twice before with its previous owner, Chris Bull, who has been very generous to me. It was the yacht’s turn this year.” 

Hodgkinson, from the CYCA, has had an extraordinary last three years in sailing. In 2011 he was named Ocean Racing Rookie of the Year, then in 2012, the Ocean Racer of the Year after winning the CYCA’s Blue Water Point Score and now the Rolex Sydney Hobart. He was also a member of the winning Southern Cross Cup team.

The CYCA congratulates all winners and every competitor in the race. We look forward to seeing you on the start line for our 70th Anniversary race in 2014.
